About The Role
We are seeking a talented and experienced Research Engineer to join our newly established team in London, UK, focused on advancing our machine learning systems for autonomous vehicle evaluation and simulation. In this hybrid role, you will collaborate closely with teams in Oxford and MTV to develop foundational models that enhance simulation realism and evaluation accuracy. Your work will involve designing experiments, developing metrics, training large-scale models, and integrating these models into our simulation platforms. This position offers the opportunity to work at the forefront of autonomous vehicle technology, contributing to innovations that improve safety, efficiency, and the overall performance of Waymo’s autonomous driving systems. You will be part of a world-class research engineering team dedicated to transforming research ideas into scalable, production-ready solutions, all while helping to shape the future of mobility technology.
Qualifications
* Minimum of 7+ years of experience in applied Deep Learning
* Proven coding and design skills with extensive experience in software development
* Strong background in solving complex production problems using state-of-the-art machine learning techniques
* Experience transitioning research into scalable production environments
* Expertise in Data Analysis or Data Science
* At least 1+ years of people management experience
* Excellent collaboration and communication skills
* Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field (advanced degree preferred)
Responsibilities
* Join and contribute to a world-class research engineering team focused on enhancing ultra-realistic autonomous vehicle simulations using foundation models
* Collaborate with teams in Waymo Oxford to leverage large models for improving simulation realism
* Design and execute experiments to push the boundaries of autonomous vehicle simulation capabilities
* Develop and refine metrics to evaluate the realism and accuracy of simulated environments
* Train and evaluate large machine learning models and integrate them into simulation platforms and downstream applications
* Participate in hiring efforts to attract outstanding research engineers from diverse backgrounds
* Translate research ideas into scalable, production-grade solutions that advance the company’s technological capabilities
