Build the systems that run a UK ISP — with an AI at your side
We are an established UK broadband and mobile provider that builds its own tools rather than buying them. Our business support system (BSS) — ordering, provisioning, ticketing, warehouse, collections, One Touch Switch, supplier billing checks — is written in-house, and it is what lets a small team punch well above its weight.
We are hiring a developer to work directly alongside our technical lead and Claude, the AI we use every day as a working collaborator. This is not a "we use Copilot for autocomplete" role. Claude designs, writes and reviews production code with us; your job is to direct that work, judge it, integrate it and ship it. If you have already found that pairing with an AI makes you far more productive — and you want to do that all day, on systems that real customers and staff depend on — this is the role.
What you will do
- Turn operational problems ("orders stall here", "billing files don't reconcile", "staff re-key this three times") into specified, working systems — *fast*.
- Pair with Claude to design, build, test and harden new BSS modules and integrations, then take ownership of getting them live.
- Work against wholesale and carrier APIs (broadband aggregators, Openreach-based suppliers, One Touch Switch, mobile SIM management) — SOAP, XML, REST and JWT auth, often with thin or wrong documentation.
- Build internal tooling that changes how the business operates: automation of manual processes, dashboards, reconciliation engines, customer self-service, and the odd AI-driven feature (we already run an AI first-responder in our ticket system).
- Deploy and look after what you build on our Plesk-managed VPS hosting.
- Review AI-generated code critically: security, edge cases, data integrity and performance are yours to sign off, not the model's.
- Ship in small, frequent increments across our family of brands.
- Improve and enhance what is built to ensure we are ahead of the game.
Our stack
- PHP 8.3+, PDO, MariaDB — framework-free, minimal dependencies
- Vanilla JavaScript, HTML/CSS; no build pipeline
- Plesk-managed VPS hosting, nginx, zip deployment
- Integrations via SOAP, REST/JSON, Microsoft Graph, Stripe, GoCardless, Royal Mail
- Claude (Anthropic) as the day-to-day development partner
What we are looking for
Must have
- Practical backend web development and relational database experience — you can design a schema, write the queries and make them fast.
- Real experience using AI coding assistants to build production software, and clear opinions on where they help and where they get it wrong.
- Comfortable working with third-party APIs, including badly documented ones, and debugging by reading the wire.
- Security-minded: auth, sessions, CSRF, input handling and personal data are second nature.
- Able to take a loosely described business problem and turn it into a scoped, buildable spec — you will often be the one writing the brief for Claude.
- Right to work in the UK; fluent written British English.
Desirable
- Knowledge of PHP (plain, framework-free) and MariaDB/MySQL.
- Experience administering or deploying to a Plesk-managed VPS.
- Telecoms or ISP background (broadband provisioning, Openreach/wholesale processes, billing and reconciliation, One Touch Switch).
- WordPress plugin development.
- Experience with TM Forum APIs, CDR pipelines or TR-069/ACS.
- Experience with data reconciliation or duplicate-detection logic.
What this role is really like
Honest version: it is fast, unglamorous and satisfying. You will not spend weeks in planning. You will be given a problem on Monday and expected to have something usable by Thursday, using Claude to get there and your own judgement to make sure it is right. Some days that is a new module; some days it is untangling a supplier's XML quirk that nobody else has documented. If you need a big team, a Jira board and a design system before you write a line, this will frustrate you. If you like owning systems end to end and seeing them used the same week, you will thrive.
What we offer
- £30,000-£32500
- Monday to Friday 09:00 - 17:30
- Office-based role at our Modern Newmarket office — this is an in-house position, not remote or hybrid
- Direct access to the technical lead and a genuine say in what gets built
- Anthropic Claude subscription and the tools you need
- The chance to define how a UK ISP builds with AI, rather than inherit someone else's process

We are an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all backgrounds. Please note this is an office-based role; we are not able to offer remote working.
