Data and AI Governance Manager

Originally named, Great British Nuclear, Great British Energy Nuclear is an arm’s length body of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, dedicated to supporting the development and deployment of new nuclear technologies in Great Britain. We play a crucial role in advancing nuclear new build, ensuring the UK’s energy security and achieving net-zero carbon emissions. Great British Energy – Nuclear focuses on fostering innovation, facilitating investment, and coordinating efforts across the nuclear industry to build a resilient and sustainable energy future.

Great British Energy – Nuclear’s first step was to start the technology selection process for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in 2023. SMRs can potentially be quicker to deploy and less expensive to build than traditional nuclear power plants because they are smaller, have factory-based modular manufacturing and more flexible deployment options. In June 2025, Great British Energy – Nuclear announced that Rolls-Royce SMR had been selected as the preferred bidder to build the UK’s first SMRs, following a technology selection process that began in 2023.

Role Description

The Data \& AI Governance Manager is responsible for improving the quality, consistency and trustworthiness of organisational data across Great British Energy – Nuclear.

The role leads the implementation of Data Governance practices that establish clear ownership, accountability and control of critical organisational data. Working across business, programme and digital teams, the role drives improvements in data quality, data maturity and stewardship, ensuring that data used for reporting, analysis and AI initiatives is trusted and fit for purpose.

The Data \& AI Governance Manager is responsible for coordinating the organisation's Data Quality Improvement Programme, establishing governance processes, supporting Data Owners and Data Stewards, and driving continuous improvement in the way data is managed across GBE-N.

The role acts as the focal point for Data Governance and Data Quality matters, working closely with the Data Operations Manager, AI Product Owner, BI Service Owner, Data Architects, Information Management teams and technical specialists to promote consistent, high-quality data practices that deliver measurable business value.

The role requires a combination of Data Governance expertise, stakeholder engagement, organisational change and practical implementation skills within a complex and evolving programme environment.

Key Responsibilities

Data Quality Leadership. Lead the organisational Data Quality Improvement Programme. Establish and maintain Data Quality objectives, measures and performance targets. Define approaches for measuring and monitoring the quality of critical organisational data. Coordinate investigation, root cause analysis and remediation of data quality issues. Drive continuous improvement initiatives that improve the completeness, consistency, accuracy and reliability of organisational data.

Data Governance Framework. Establish, maintain and continuously improve the Data Governance Framework. Develop governance processes, standards and controls that support effective data management. Define governance requirements for critical organisational data. Coordinate governance forums, working groups and decision-making activities. Ensure governance activities remain proportionate, practical and outcome focused.

Data Ownership and Stewardship. Establish and support Data Owner and Data Steward communities. Define and promote accountability for organisational data assets. Support business stakeholders in understanding and fulfilling governance responsibilities. Facilitate collaboration across business functions to improve data quality outcomes. Promote a culture of ownership and accountability for data.

Data Standards \& Consistency. Support the definition and adoption of business data standards, reference data and common business definitions. Drive improvements in breakdown structure maturity and consistency across organisational data. Promote standardisation of critical data used in reporting, analytics and AI. Support alignment between business processes, reporting requirements and data structures.

AI \& Analytics Readiness. Work with the AI Product Owner, BI Service Owner and Data Architect to identify data quality risks and dependencies. Support assessment of data readiness for AI, analytics and reporting initiatives. Promote governance practices that improve trust in AI-generated insights and reporting outputs. Help ensure that Data Governance practices evolve to meet future AI and analytics requirements.

Governance Reporting \& Improvement. Develop and maintain Data Governance and Data Quality reporting. Conduct maturity assessments and identify improvement opportunities. Report progress, risks and outcomes to governance forums and senior leadership. Track delivery of governance initiatives and associated business benefits.

Knowledge, Skills \& Experience Required

Essential

• Significant experience in Data Governance, Data Quality, Data Management or related disciplines.
• Demonstrable experience developing, implementing or operating Data Governance frameworks.
• Proven experience establishing and driving Data Quality improvement initiatives.

• Experience implementing Enterprise Data Management (EDM) initiatives.
• Experience supporting reporting, analytics or AI programmes.
• Knowledge of DAMA-DMBOK or similar industry frameworks.
• Understanding of Data Architecture, Information Management and Metadata Management disciplines.
• Experience establishing Data Owner and Data Steward communities.
• Experience operating within government, infrastructure, engineering, nuclear or other regulated environments.
• Familiarity with AI Governance, Responsible AI or AI Assurance principles.

Qualifications

Essential

• Degree-level qualification (or equivalent professional experience) in Data Management, Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Information Management, Engineering or a related discipline.
• Evidence of continuing professional development in Data Governance, Data Management or related disciplines.

Desirable

• DAMA Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) or equivalent qualification.
• Professional certification in Data Governance, Information Management or Business Analysis.
• Relevant Governance, Risk, Compliance or Quality Management qualification.
• Training or certification in AI Governance, Responsible AI or related disciplines.
• Membership of DAMA, BCS or another relevant professional body.
