Machine Learning Engineer

Machine Learning Engineer Location: York | Hybrid Hiscox is looking for an experienced Machine Learning Engineer to join our newly formed ML Engineering team within Enterprise Technology. This is a hands-on opportunity to help shape how machine-learning solutions are deployed and operated across an international specialist insurer. You will bridge the gap between Data Science and production—turning models into secure, scalable and reliable services used by the wider business. Working closely with Data Scientists, Platform Engineers and Developers, you will develop Python APIs, cloud infrastructure and automated deployment pipelines across Azure and GCP. What you’ll be doing * Build and maintain production infrastructure for real-time and batch ML models. * Develop clean, reusable Python services and APIs using FastAPI or Flask. * Create CI/CD pipelines to automate model testing and deployment. * Work with Platform Engineers to deliver scalable cloud infrastructure using infrastructure as code. * Containerise services and support reliable cloud deployments. * Monitor ML services and APIs for performance, reliability and operational issues. * Improve model registry, versioning, monitoring, upgrades and retirement processes. * Help automate the ML lifecycle, including dataset creation, training, evaluation, deployment and monitoring. * Review code, write unit tests and promote strong software-engineering standards. * Collaborate across Data Science, Data Engineering, Platform Engineering and application teams. What we’re looking for * Commercial experience deploying, monitoring and maintaining ML models in production. * Strong Python software-engineering skills, including OOP and unit testing. * Experience building APIs using FastAPI, Flask or a comparable Python framework. * Hands-on experience with Azure, GCP or AWS. * Experience with CI/CD, Git, Docker and infrastructure as code such as Terraform. * Understanding of the ML lifecycle and the challenges of converting research code into maintainable production services. * Knowledge of monitoring and logging for APIs and ML services. * Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to take ownership of technical work. * A collaborative approach and experience working within Agile teams. Experience within insurance or financial services, test-driven development, cloud networking, model registries or deployment orchestration would be beneficial. A degree in a quantitative subject—or equivalent practical experience—is welcomed. Why Hiscox?
