AI Engineer (Forward Deployed) | London | Hybrid

I’m working with a growing AI-Native Technology Consultancy that’s looking for an experienced (Senior / Lead) AI Engineer to join the team.

This is a hands-on role with a forward-deployed edge. You’ll work directly with clients, getting close to real-world problems, data and technical environments, then designing and building AI solutions that actually get used.

Think AI Engineer with a Field CTO mindset, understand the problem, shape the solution, build it, and help get it into production.

What you’ll be doing

  • Working directly with clients to understand technical and business problems
  • Designing and building AI-powered applications, prototypes and production solutions
  • Working with LLMs, RAG, agents and AI-enabled workflows
  • Integrating AI solutions with existing systems, APIs and data
  • Taking ideas from early concepts through to reliable, production-ready software
  • Building in the right approach to testing, evaluation, security and scalability
  • Working closely with engineers, technical leaders and senior client stakeholders
  • Helping teams understand where AI can genuinely improve products, processes and outcomes
  • Contributing to internal AI tooling, platforms and reusable capabilities
  • Keeping up with new developments across AI and working out where they can actually add value

What we're looking for

You’ll likely have a strong software engineering background and hands-on experience building and shipping AI-enabled applications.

Experience across some of the following would be valuable

  • Python, TypeScript and/or Rust
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals
  • LLM-based applications
  • RAG and retrieval-based systems
  • Agentic AI or AI workflow orchestration
  • APIs, integrations and data
  • Testing and evaluating AI systems
  • Cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP
  • CI/CD and modern engineering practices
  • Building software that has made it into production

We're interested in builders people who enjoy getting stuck into difficult problems, experimenting quickly and turning ideas into something useful.

You'll probably be someone who

  • Enjoys working directly with customers
  • Is comfortable operating with a high degree of autonomy
  • Can move between technical detail and the bigger picture
  • Doesn't need everything perfectly defined before getting started
  • Has strong software engineering fundamentals
  • Thinks commercially and focuses on outcomes rather than technology for technology's sake
  • Enjoys experimenting with new technology but knows when to keep things simple
  • Can explain complex technical ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical people

Experience in consultancy, startups, product businesses or other fast-moving environments would be useful, but it's ultimately what you've built and how you approach problems that matters.
