Staff Engineer - AI Developer Experience

We’re supporting a high growth FinTech/product company looking for a Staff AI Engineer to help define how AI changes the way software is built across its engineering organisation.

This is a highly technical, hands-on Staff role with significant ownership. You’ll explore, architect and build AI powered developer capabilities , identifying where LLMs and agentic systems can create genuine engineering leverage and taking ideas from experimentation through to production adoption.

What you’ll be doing

  • Own and steer the technical direction

for AI-powered Developer Experience across the engineering organisation.

  • Architect and build

coding agents, AI developer tooling and intelligent engineering workflows .

  • Work across areas such as

code generation, codebase understanding, automated testing, debugging, code review and AI-assisted SDLC workflows .

  • Build integrations between

LLMs/agents, engineering systems, developer tooling and complex codebases .

  • Explore emerging models, frameworks and approaches, making strong technical decisions around

what to build, buy or integrate

.

  • Prototype rapidly, evaluate effectiveness and turn successful approaches into

robust production capabilities

.

  • Establish technical patterns and influence how engineering teams adopt AI across the development lifecycle.
  • Operate as a

Staff-level technical authority

, influencing architecture and engineering direction across teams.

What we’re looking for

  • Significant experience as a

senior/staff-level software or AI engineer

, with strong computer science and software engineering fundamentals.

  • Hands-on experience designing and building

LLM-powered systems, AI agents or agentic architectures

.

  • Strong knowledge of

tool use, context engineering, orchestration, evaluation and reliability in production AI systems.

  • Experience with

developer tooling, coding agents, code intelligence, automated testing/debugging or AI-assisted software engineering is highly desirable.

  • Comfortable getting deep into

codebases, architecture and engineering infrastructure

rather than operating purely at strategy level.

  • Strong technical judgement and the ability to

set direction and influence senior engineers and engineering leadership .

  • Comfortable tackling ambiguous technical problems where the solution, and sometimes the problem itself, still needs to be defined.

Why it’s interesting

You won’t be joining to simply implement an existing AI roadmap. You’ll have the opportunity to help define it .

The business is investing seriously in AI native engineering and wants someone capable of determining where these technologies genuinely create leverage, building the underlying capabilities and influencing how they are adopted across engineering.

It’s a rare opportunity to combine senior level software engineering, applied AI and Developer Experience with genuine ownership over the technical direction.
