Junior Software Developer Location:  Edinburgh Company:  Applied Computer Vision Ltd Role type:  Full-time Salary:  £33,000 per annum Applied Computer Vision is a growing Edinburgh-based technology company developing practical computer vision and AI systems for real-world industrial applications. We build systems that use cameras, edge computing and cloud software to solve operational problems in sectors including food production, manufacturing and retail. We are looking for a  Junior Software Developer  to join our small technical team. This is a hands-on engineering role suited to someone early in their career who wants to build real systems, take responsibility for their work and develop quickly within a growing company. The role You will work across a mixture of software development, computer vision, cloud infrastructure and system integration. Typical work may include: * Developing and maintaining Python applications * Working with computer vision and AI models * Building APIs and backend services * Developing internal and customer-facing web applications * Working with databases and cloud infrastructure * Integrating cameras, edge computers and other hardware * Testing, debugging and deploying systems * Supporting existing customer installations * Using modern AI development tools to accelerate coding, debugging and problem-solving * Working directly with the wider team to turn customer requirements into practical solutions Because we are a small company, the role is varied. You will not be limited to one narrow area of software development, and you will have the opportunity to see projects through from initial idea to deployment. What we are looking for We are primarily looking for someone with the right attitude, aptitude and practical ability rather than an extensive CV. You should be: * A capable programmer with a good understanding of software development fundamentals * Comfortable using AI-assisted development tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot or similar * Able to use AI productively while still understanding, testing and taking responsibility for the code you produce * Comfortable working independently once given clear direction * Willing to ask questions when you do not know something * Pragmatic and focused on delivering working solutions * Open to feedback and willing to learn * Comfortable working in a small company where priorities can change * Interested in AI, computer vision and real-world engineering - Experience with some of the following would be useful, but is not essential: * Python * Linux * Git * SQL / MySQL * REST APIs * AWS * JavaScript / Vue / React * OpenCV * YOLO or other computer vision models Experience This role would suit: * A recent graduate in software engineering, computer science, electronic engineering or a related subject * Someone with 1–3 years of commercial software development experience * A self-taught developer with strong practical projects and demonstrable ability We care much more about what you can build than the exact title of your degree. What to expect This is deliberately a  junior development role . You will be given meaningful responsibility and considerable exposure to different technologies, but you will also be expected to learn, take direction and build experience before progressing into senior or leadership responsibilities. For the right person, there is significant opportunity to grow as the company grows. You will work closely with the company’s technical and commercial teams and will get much more exposure to customers, product development and real-world deployments than you would typically receive in a large organisation. About Applied Computer Vision Applied Computer Vision develops camera-based AI systems that help businesses monitor processes, improve quality, improve safety and automate manual checks. Our systems are deployed in real operating environments rather than remaining as research projects or demonstrations. We are a small team, so individual contributions matter and good ideas can be implemented quickly. Applying Please send us your CV along with a short introduction explaining: * Why the role interests you * Any software projects you are particularly proud of * Which AI development tools you currently use and how you use them * What you would like to learn over the next few years * Links to GitHub, personal projects or other examples of your work are very welcome.
