Our activities are diverse, enabling the aviation industry to meet the highest safety standards, and we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to the constantly evolving aviation environment.   The Role As part of the CAA's technical safety and security team, you will support Artificial Intelligence certification, assurance and regulatory activities across Airworthiness, RPAS (drones), ATM/ANS and innovation programmes, helping to shape the safe adoption of AI within aviation.   As an AI Certification Analyst, you will provide specialist regulatory analysis and technical expertise on the use of AI and machine learning within safety-critical aerospace systems. Working closely with internal teams, aerospace industry and other regulators, you will help enable innovation while maintaining appropriate aviation safety standards.   You will support the delivery of regulatory activities through research, technical assessment and policy development, contributing to the CAA's evolving approach to AI assurance, certification and governance. You will monitor emerging technologies, prepare evidence-based recommendations and share developments from the UK and international regulatory landscape.   You'll work with government, industry and international regulators to understand emerging technologies, identify regulatory challenges and support the Department for Transport's Future of Flight ambitions through the development of future aviation regulations, standards and guidance.   Embedded within the Aviation Security Cyber Team, you will help develop the CAA's strategy for regulating AI in aviation, supporting the creation of certification and assurance frameworks aligned with international best practice.   Core Accountabilities * Provide technical expertise supporting AI certification, assurance and oversight activities across aviation programmes. * Develop guidance, frameworks and internal processes for AI assurance and regulatory compliance. * Undertake research into AI technologies, methodologies and assurance approaches that are relevant to aviation safety systems. * Support detailed multi-disciplined analysis of AI enabled systems, applications, and use cases, within a regulatory context. * Deliver the review of technical documentation, evidence, and other materials relevant to AI certification/assurance activity. * Prepare and deliver technical summaries, briefing notes, and analytical outputs for internal stakeholder use. * Conduct horizon scanning activities for developments in AI, machine learning, and related assurance or regulatory topics. * Manage high levels of stakeholder liaison both within and outside the CAA, incorporating other regulatory bodies and industry groups both nationally and internationally. * Make effective contributions and provide comprehensive recommendations to national and international aerospace AI policy development. About You Essential: * Degree (or equivalent experience) in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline. * Relevant work experience, or evidence of relevant academic, internship, placement, or dissertation. * Working understanding of AI and machine learning concepts, methods, and lifecycle. * Demonstratable knowledge of relevant materials such as OECD AI principles, NIST AI RMF, OWASP GenAI, AI Standards Hub. * Able to travel both nationally and internationally. * Team worker with flexible and adaptable work ethos, highly analytic and lateral thinker with an eye for detail; methodical with a critical systems approach; creative and innovative with a good ability to problem solve. * Exposure to assurance, audit, regulatory, or standards related work within a safety-critical industry.   Desirable: * Aviation knowledge or experience is highly desirable, including familiarity of relevant regulation e.g. EASA Part 21. * Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of an organisation. * Able to produce concise and unambiguous discussion papers for presentation at various audience levels. * The role holder must be passionate about AI safety and security, with a keen interest in aerospace, staying up to date on relevant trends/issues. Additional Information For many appointments within the CAA, these roles require access to operationally sensitive infrastructure and/or Nationally Protected information. Our move is driven by strategic, operational and environmental considerations.   We will be moving to a new local home, up to a 15-mile radius of Aviation House, to minimise disruption for our valued colleagues and customers.   We are now working with colleagues and visitors to understand what we need in our new office, before we start our property search.
