AI Algorithm Engineer (Agentic RAG & Document Intelligence)

Company Overview smartR AI is an award-winning, Edinburgh-based AI company. Our SCOTi® platform sits above the traditional IT stack to create an Enterprise Knowledge Layer — giving large organisations the ability to find, understand and solve problems across the enterprise. We’re a small, senior team, and we’ve just been funded. We are rolling out SCOTi to a major automotive OEM, and we’re hiring two engineers to help deliver it. Job Overview You’ll deploy and extend SCOTi at a large manufacturer building the AI that reads, connects and reasons over engineering knowledge — drawings, specifications, quality reports, telematics and warranty data. Working alongside the developers who created SCOTi, you’ll get genuine mentorship and genuine ownership: your algorithms will run in production, on the line, at scale. Duties * Causal discovery — algorithms that find the root causes of quality concerns in complex manufacturing data * Agentic RAG — retrieval, ranking and context-selection methods that make answering hard questions across the enterprise possible * Discrepancy AI — document-intelligence pipelines that extract and cross-check information from drawings, specs and unstructured documents * Connectors — robust integrations that pull information from legacy enterprise systems Requirements * *Skills:* - Strong mathematical foundations — information theory, optimisation, statistics. - Knowledge of vibe coding - A creative problem-solver who brainstorms well and gives and receives ideas generously - The right to work in the UK * *Knowledge (not required):* - NLP, LLMs, RAG, information retrieval or knowledge graphs - Data engineering — APIs, SQL, messy real-world data - Interest in manufacturing or industrial applications * *Experience:* - Suitable for entry level and candidates with 1-2 years of experience.
