Data, AI, and Systems Specialist

Full-time: 37.5 hours/week Contract duration: Fixed-term for 12 months, with potential for extension subject to funding   Location: Remote within the UK, with occasional travel to our London office   Line managed by: Senior Data and M\&E Specialist Line management responsibilities: None Salary: £42,000 *Position is advertised subject to funding* About GISF The Global Interagency Security Forum (GISF) is a member-led NGO network working to strengthen security risk management across the humanitarian and development sectors. With over 150 member organisations, GISF provides resources, convening spaces, and expertise to help keep aid workers safe.  About the role The operating environment of NGOs is changing rapidly. From increasingly complex security risks to eroding respect for International Humanitarian Law, NGOs are facing challenges that require innovative solutions to sustain safe delivery of aid. As data and AI become more important to how GISF works, this new position has been created to bring help us deliver on this mission.   In this role, you’ll: * Lead AI projects — build AI tools that improve aid worker security for the entire NGO sector, and internal products to improve efficiency * Data and insights — improve NGOs’ access to information and evidence, through analysis, insights, and data viz products * Support GISF’s data infrastructure — help the Senior Data and M\&E Specialist to build, automate, and manage systems, tools, protocols and documentation that GISF relies on * Thought leadership – Develop into a thought leader on the use of AI in NGO security This is a new position, so you’ll have freedom to shape the role and create projects and solutions from scratch. You’ll balance your own projects with day-to-day support to other teams, working across the organisation. It will suit someone comfortable with ambiguity, a problem solver with a knack for spotting opportunities for innovation, and a quick learner who can pick up new tools and subject areas without much handholding. Key Responsibilities External AI Projects \& Tools   * Understand the security challenges facing aid workers and come up with tools and solutions for NGOs * Create tools that improve GISF’s internal processes, automating repetitive tasks, and improving efficiencies * Create standards for the responsible, secure use of AI at GISF * Develop into a thought leader on the use of AI in NGO security, contributing to guides, tools, workshops, or webinars External-facing Data Projects \& Tools   * Contribute to work requiring quantitative data design and analysis * Conceptualise and deliver data systems and tools that contribute to sector data infrastructure on SRM (dashboards, databases, briefs) Internal Data Systems \& Infrastructure   With the Senior Data and M\&E Specialist:   * Maintain and improve GISF’s data software, systems and tools * Identify opportunities for GISF to embed AI tools into its data and analysis processes * Carry out regular data cleaning, processing and structured storage * Keep data documentation up to date so systems are transparent and transferable * Provide hands-on support to colleagues across GISF Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Support   * Support the Senior Data and M\&E Specialist with MEL, including data collection, analysis, cleaning, and management as required External Engagement \& Partner Support   * Respond to data-related queries from project partners and member organisations * Stay up to date with AI developments and best practice applications, both in NGO communities and the wider industry * Participate in relevant external meetings and learning exchanges, including GISF’s AI Working Group * Provide practical support to partners and members on AI, data, and MEL practice where needed Knowledge Products   * Help translate evidence and analysis into accessible formats for different audiences * Produce data visualisations, dashboards, and reports to support internal reporting and external communications of insights and analysis Person Specification This is a broad role with a range of requirements.
